Tonight's Gig
Room25: VADA

Pianist/ composer Aaron Choulai has been mainly based in New York over the last few years, promoting his Sunnyside label recordings. Before returning overseas from this visit, he will reconvene his first recorded ensemble, his sextet VADA. This very exciting sextet was formed in 2000, and comprised some of the most outstanding young talents on the local scene. All members are V.C.A. graduates and still aged around their mid-20s, with Eamon McNelis (trumpet), Shannon Barnett (trombone), Carlo Barbaro (tenor sax), Tom Lee (acoustic bass) and Rory McDougall (drums). In addition to high energy and unified ensemble sound, they display a refreshing spirit often missing with young players obsessed with technical precison. While Vada’s music cannot be pinned to a particular genre, the music verges on the theatrical, and the solitude and melancholy of the shtetl can be heard, as well as influences ranging from Bartok to Mingus to Mr Bungle. Most of their material is based on folk forms such as tango, waltz and klezmer, but reharmonised with unusual textures, and in an update of the Mingus approach, they also incorporate contemporary influences such as hip-hop. In addition to material from their self-titled debut CD, they will perform new compositions.

Jazz Lab: Cindy Blackman Quartet (USA)

Cindy Blackman has been touted as "one of the hottest drummers in the business", and is regarded as one of the top drummers in the world.

Born in Ohio and raised in Connecticut, Cindy began her musical career as a New York street performer. She spent three semesters at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and also studied with legendary teacher Alan Dawson. Cindy moved to New York City in the 80's and since that time, she has been seen and heard by millions of people all over the world performing with her own group and during her 15 year stint with retro funk rocker Lenny Kravitz.

She's upheld the backbeat and created texture for a veritable "Who's Who" in jazz: Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Wallace Roney, Don Pullen, Hugh Masekela, Pharaoh Sanders, Sam Rivers, Cassandra Wilson, Angela Bofill, Bill Laswell, Buckethead, Jean-Paul Bourelly Ron Carter and many more.

Cindy released her 8th solo album in February 2008 under her own production and as her first independent album - entitled “Music for the New Millennium.” Cindy's last two solo releases “Works On Canvas” and more recently, “Music For The New Millennium”, both feature the talents of Cindy's touring quartet Including J.D. Allen (Tenor Saxophone), Carlton Holmes (Piano/Fender Rhodes) and George Mitchell ( Acoustic Bass).
