Anton
Delecca formed this group in mid 1998 after returning from a year in Sydney.
The band plays original material written by Delecca with the occasionl jazz
standard thrown in for good measure. Due to his eclectic taste in music
Anton wanted to form aband with musicians who would be comfortable playing
different styles of music and who wouldn't be restricted to straight-ahead
jazz. The band's influence include Jazz, Latin, African, ECM and Funk. The
band performs regularly at Bennetts Lane, Melbourne Australia and each member
of the group is kept busy as a freelance musician in Melbourne. In 1999
they recorded for Jim Mcloed's Jazztrack on ABC Classic M Radio. In January
2001 they performed to a packed room at the Jazz Lab as part of the MelbourneInternational
Jazz Festival. In September 2001 they released their debut album 'Flow'
at Bennetts Lane, Melbourne. Available through Newmarket Music and Benetts
Lane. In 2000 Anton Delecca spent two months in New York studying with Dave Liebman, Chris Potter, George Garzone nd Joel Frahm. "Its
been a busy time for Delecca, one of Melbournes leading young tenor
players. Les than two years ago he was studying in New York with some top
players, and last year he was gigging abroad as well as turning up in places
such as the Wangaratta Festival to play with headlining US guest, Odean
Pope. He also launched this debut CD with his quartet and gave support on
trumpeter Paul Williamsons album (see below). It says something of
his standing now that his quartet boasts some of our best musicians
Mark Fitzgibbon (piano), Matt Clohesy (bass) and Dave Beck (drums) are among
the most recorded musicians in Melbourne these days. This project is solidly
in their camp. Built around the luscious tone and fluid, boppish lines of
Deleccas playing, the quartet is a mainstream jazz fans delight,
sounding vital and fresh and invested with classic values of cohesion and
drive. There is an Afro-Cuban tinge to The Operator (a tour de force by
Beck and Fitzgibbon), a sublime rendition of the Bourke/van Heusen classic
But Beautiful (all the other tunes are by Delecca), and a couple
of forays on soprano sax to back his claim. This is a confident and classy
album, genuinely creative even while firmly situated within known territory." Shane Nichols, All-About-Jazz.com |
