Highly respected pianist/composer Dr. Tony Gould is one of the most prized and recognised figures in the Australian jazz scene.
Recently awarded the coveted Australian Jazz Bell Award for the Hall of Fame, tonight is a brief snapshot into the magnificent musical universe that resides between his imagination and his hands. His many recordings and performances reveal his harmonic view of music and his love of music from both African-American and European jazz traditions, as well as the classical works of Bach, Mahler, Stravinsky and Messiaen. Joining his family of influences are the friends that have helped bring his music to life. Tonight they include his wife Imogen Manins (cello), Tamara Murphy (bass), Tony Floyd (drums), Rob Burke (tenor sax) and Gian Slater (vocals).
Come join us as we hang his portrait on the Hall of Fame wall here at Bennetts Lane, and hear the musical portrait that proves it deserves to be there.
“The compositions are beautiful – melodies that have an accessible pop sensibility,
set over a dense tapestry of rich and interesting harmony. Beautiful; just beautiful.”
(Steve Kormanic, Melbourne Flamenco Guitarist, December 2011)
Jazz through a unique and unusual eye-piece; the music David Dower & Josh Kelly is
a walking contradiction, where the deepest emotions are blended with a beautiful
Australian humour. Whether you walk away crying or laughing, this is music that will
move you.
This young duo has gone from strength to strength in 2011. They produced their
independently released album, which received airplay on both PBS and 3CR radio,
and is available on iTunes. The pair have also been seen performing in a number of
Melbourne’s best jazz venues developing a dedicated and supportive audience.
This performance will act as a farewell to pianist David Dower who is preparing for
an extended trip to Western Australia to enjoy some brighter weather, and complete
some further study. We hope you can come down for some music, some laughs and
a good time!
