Following last year’s highly successful CD launch, Paris-based and Tasmanian-born pianist Matt Boden is back with his group MB4. Boden will be re-united with Leigh Barker (bass), Gideon Brazil (tenor sax) and Alastair McGrath-Kerr (drums) to present high-energy jazz firmly rooted in melody and swing. Boden’s originals are coupled with original arrangements of lesser-known show tunes. The sound of the band and the compositions draws from Harry Connick Jr.’s instrumental quartet, Ahmad Jamal, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Hank Jones.

Students from the Contemporary Music Performance stream present two performances of original works and arrangements for small ensembles.

Three of the best ensembles go through to the final on Tuesday 30 April for their chance to win a session in the Sound Research Studio at the VCA to record and mix their original compositions.

Special guest, contemporary pianist and composer Andrea Keller will join the selection panel and will give a feature performance on the second evening of the Series.
