Edgy electric guitarist Nashua Lee, a finalist in the 2007 Wangaratta Guitar Jazz Awards finalist, and best-known for his contributions to Murphy's Law, Barney McAll and Twelve Tone Diamonds, formed Rabid Hawk in 2006 as collective group to workshop rhythmic, cross genre and compositional ideas. The original trio of Lee (guitar), Julien Wilson (tenor sax) and Sam Bates (drums) was later reinvigorated as a
quintet, enlisting the younger talents of Mark Hannaford (piano), and and new member, Marty Holoubek (acoustic bass) who recently relocated here from Adelaide. They will combine some new original tunes with an exploration of the standard jazz repertoire.
"What really sets them apart is the broad musical palette they have to play with, including complex unusual beats and time signatures, an array of harmonies and dissonances, and brilliant use of dynamics" - Indigo Music, Sept 2009
"Nashua Lee's electric guitar could either hook into the music's seductive sway or skip across it in resonant, iridescent waves." - Jessica Nicholas, The Age, November, 2005
"His playing gripped me in Murphy's Law, in his guitar competition heat, and in his own band, where in one racing passage he tightened his lyrical sound, made the chord more dissonant and distorted, until he seemed to meet resistance in the air. Or as if he had bottomed out on a big wave before cutting back and taking off again." -John Clare, SIMA, Nov.
