If there was one voice in Australian jazz more recognized than any other, it would be that of Vince Jones. Our leading vocalist, interpreter, trumpet player and composer has entertained and informed us for decades with his ever-evolving elite group of musicians. For this performance, Vince is joined by Matt McMahon on piano, Ben Robertson on bass and Tony Floyd on drums.
Vince Jones' music includes original songs and beautiful contemporary versions of jazz standards. His themes are often love, injustice, peace and anti-greed. The heart of his work lies at the crossroads of Afro-American blues and the melodies of the Celtic folk tradition. The songs he chooses - written by him or by others - always make an original, personal statement.
"I believe that all of your experiences affect who you are, how you think, speak and how you sing. You could say that my voice is a cacophony of the music, musicians, politics, mentors and philosophers that I've been lucky enough to have been introduced to. And if my voice is 'distinct', then I have to thank all of those people and experiences for helping me find my identity." - Vince Jones
On shore leave for one night and one night only, Eyal & the Skeleton Crew return to Melbourne’s iconic Bennetts Lane Jazz Club for a night of songs, stories and scallywagging.
Equal parts cowboy and gypsy, Eyal is a weaver of tales boasting tapestries of grand scope. Join Eyal, the raconteur, and his dapper pack of virtuosi before they set sail once more.
Whirling waltzes, breakneck country rhythms and crunching gypsy beats combine to create a tantalizingly raucous show. Seasoned seafarers one moment and then black-lunged miners at the drop of a hat, the musical repertory tallies an assortment of strings, clarinets both large and small, and a colourful range of voices to support and counter Eyal’s gravel-sodden growls. The Skeleton Crew are a crashing, howling musical dynamo with more than a few tricks up their sleeves – swapping from harmonicas to castanets in a flash, riposting Eyal’s lines with sharp quips, the aptly named Skeleton Crew are the backbone of the captain’s musical flesh.
Eyal Chamiedes: vocals, guitar, piano
Rob Grozdan: vocals & harmonica
Erin Heycox: violin & vocals
Ed Ferris: clarinets
Tom Flenady: double bass
