This special collaboration featuring two of Europe's free jazz originators, Germany's Mani Neumieier (drums) and Melbourne-based Dutchman Kris Wanders (tenor saxophone) was premiered in Australia in January 2011, when they were joined by outstanding locals Brett Evans (tenor sax), Brisbane-based Yusuke Akai (guitar) and acoustic bassist Ali Watts. Neumieier is regarded as one of Europe's finest percussionists, credited as the first free jazz drummer in Europe. He has played or recorded with Peter Brotzmann, Irene Schweizer, Sonny Sharrock, Philly Joe Jones, Kawabata Makoto, Dieter Mobius, and Brian Eno.
He was also founder and leader of legendary German krautrock group Guru-Guru (28 albums) since 1968. Wanders is a major musical presence on the local scene since relocating from Europe many years back. Still highly regarded internationally, he regularly performs throughout Europe, Japan and New Zealand. Wanders and Neumeier are featured together on the landmark 1966 recording "Globe Unity" by Alexander Schlippenbach, and have collaborated intermittently over the years since.
